Abstract:

To estimate the prevalences of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents attending primary and secondary school, according to gender, socio-economic status (SES), and achieved height for age. The population was 154 children aged 8.79 ± 0.56 and 146 adolescents aged 17.7 ± 1.14 in Salta city in 1997. Methods. Cross sectional study, random sample, in public and private schools. Body mass index (BMI) was compared with NHANES reference. Those with BMI >85th percentile were considered overweighted and those with BMI >95th percentile were considered obese. When BMI was crossed with other variables, underweight was defined as P85. Height was considered low when it fell below P10 from NCHS curves.
Results.Obesity prevalence in children and adolescents was 12.3 and 8.9%, respectively. In both groups it was more frequent in girls (16% and 12%) than in boys (7.3% and 5.3%). Gender difference in children was: p= 0.0398. The prevalence of overweight did not differ between populations. Children and adolescents who belonged to high SES had more overweight (25% and 23.1%) than those in low SES (8.7 and 11.1%). There were 17.4 and 22.2% underweighted children and adolescents in low SES groups. In children with height deficit, the prevalence of overweight (3.8%) was lower than in those with normal height (21.1%). In the first group the frequency of low BMI was 26.9% vs. 12.5% in the second. Conclusions.Prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents is high. The problem focuses on girls and in middle and upper SES. Those in the low SES group still have a pre-transitional pattern of nutritional status. School based strategies to promote healthier life styles should be developed. Low SES children must receive school-feeding programs.
